VGPS-evo - kitchen interlock gas system

The VGPS-evo offers a complete single panel package patented by Medem UK

VGPS-evo combines and supersedes the features of our popular VGPS-K and VGPS-K-CO2 panels. It is a gas pressure proving system with ventilation interlock and CO2 monitoring designed for use within commercial kitchens.

Very easy to use, the LCD displays clear messages giving real information rather than just LED indications.

It is a requirement that any mechanical ventilation within a kitchen environment (both supply and extract) is switched on and running before the use of any gas appliances can take place. With the VGPS-evo if the ventilation is not switched on, the LCD display informs the operator that the fans are off and to switch on the fans and restart the panel.

With the fans on and running the system will then perform a downstream integrity check using our patented “Differential Pressure Proving” method.

In addition, it monitors the carbon dioxide level to ensure that HSE set levels are not exceeded. Should the carbon dioxide level rise above 2,300 ppm the panel LCD will advise staff to “increase the ventilation fan speed at the speed controllers.” The maximum allowed level of carbon dioxide is 2,800 ppm, as published in HSE catering sheet 23 revision 1 and Technical Bulletin 140. At this level, the system will isolate the gas and advise the staff to ventilate the kitchen.

From within the panel the engineer has several “engineer functions” which can be used to aid in the setup of the system – such as displaying in real time both the inlet and outlet pressure at the gas valve (mbar) and the ability to power the valve at a button press, its with functions like these that for example a “valve let by indication” check be performed with ease.

  • A let by and a dynamic pressure loss reading can be viewed by the engineer using the push buttons on the circuit board or facia “Power” button. The Gas pressure readouts on the LCD indicating the pressure on both sides of the valve.
  • The carbon dioxide PPM levels can be seen by pressing the “Alert” button on the panel facia.

For the interlocking of the ventilation our current monitoring unit (CM2M-K) or pressure differential switches can be used.

    5 Year Warranty

    Medem’s industry leading five-year warranty is a demonstration of the company’s confidence in the quality and design of our products.

    This applies to the main panels and sender units, gas detectors carry a two year warranty.

    Where we commission an installed system the warranty is extended from five to ten years. At the time of commissioning photos and gas pressure readings are recorded along with other relevent details of the installation. A 24 hour help line number and serial number is attached with the panel and all details are then entered on to the Medem database.

    When fitted with the additional BMS relay, a signal can be taken to a contactor to switch on a fan when a set level of CO2 has been detected in order to control the ventilation rate.
    This can help to save energy by controlling fans so that as the occupancy rises and falls so will the ventilation rate.

    In commercial kitchens it is a requirement to meet current regulations BS6173, BB100, UP11 (see our standards section for more information).

    New to our systems is an over pressure alert

    Should the gas pressure rise above 70 mbar while gas is being used the panel will isolate the gas supply by closing the gas valve.
    When the panel is first switched on and if at that time the gas pressure is over 70 mbar then the gas valve will remain closed.
    Only a Medem gas pressure proving system measuring pressure on both sides of the valve can operate in the way described.
    70 mbar is above the pressure most appliances and other equipment (in buildings) has been designed to use, higher pressures can occur where a gas regulator fails.
